Beyond
The Gate
The Unofficial & Unauthorized Guide to Stargate
SG-1
By Keith
Topping
Stargate
SG-1 has gone from being a pleasing movie spin-off to being a household
word and one of the most popular and enduring SF shows of recent
years. Now in its sixth season, this phenomenon seems due for some
merchandise (it has had surprisingly little for such a popular show)
and this season-by-season guide ought to have plenty of fan appeal.
As it is an unofficial guide, there aren't any photographs of favorite
characters to drool over or shots of scenic locations, but as guides
to episodes go it is fairly exhaustive. Each episode is described
in some detail and much is made of one of the show's strongest points,
the humor of its leading light, Richard Dean Anderson, and there
are lots of quotes showing the show's lighter side. Other recurring
points are the mystifying bits that don't add up: "Logic, let
me introduce you to this window," where you have seen the various
guest stars before, notes about the planets visited, dates the episodes
aired in the US and UK and other points of interest, including the
serious issues tackled in some of the stories. And you thought it
was just a bit of fun!
But there is more. A list of websites
for fans, lots of information about the drama behind the scenes
(why Daniel left, etc.), the origins of the show and more. A big
glossy coffee table book with loads of pictures would have been
nice, but for an unofficial guide slightly slanted for Brits (but
don't let that put anybody else off) there is loads in here to keep
a fan happy for some time. If you are hoping for information about
the ultimate fate of the show, it isn't new enough for that (try
one of the websites) but the fact that this book exists shows how
many people there are out there who enjoy this unique show. We might
get to find out who the Furlings are after all
