The
Elder Gods
The Dreamers, No. 1
By David
& Leigh Eddings
The
deities of this world take it in turns to rule, and each turn lasts
25,000 years, with half of the eight immortals ruling. While they
are not ruling, they dream, and the world is thus controlled through
these special dreams. Trouble is, there is another being That Called
The Vlagh who is Lord of the Wasteland and this creature does not
sleep, but causes chaos and creates monsters. Thus it is up to the
present four immortals to try and destroy this menace and they have
to enlist the humans to help them as well as four magical Dreamers.
David and Leigh Eddings' novels are
written in such a unique way as to be instantly recognizable, and
settling down with this one is like relaxing in a warm bath. There
is lots of banter and good humor and nothing really nasty happens,
which from some fantasy fans' perspective, might not necessarily
be a good thing. However, if this unique flavour is an acquired
taste it is certainly a taste that vast numbers of fantasy fans
have acquired. Prepare yourself for an onslaught of loveable deities
and pirates, some warfare and lots of plotting (not to mention those
pink dolphins). It is enjoyable fun and the small number of characters
means that we get to know them better. Personally I would have liked
to have seen more of the enemy and found out more about the Wasteland,
of which there is much talk but no visits. This is invariably going
to be one of a new set though so maybe I won't have long to wait.
Probably more a female novel than one for the boys, this is sure
to sell millions.
