The
Nonotech War
Star Trek:
Voyager
By Steven
Piziks
The crew of Voyager is always interested
in discovering a new planet whose inhabitants have warp capability
and when an ion storm renders an alien ship incapable enough to
request help, they are keen to help. This is the very first warp-drive
mission the Chiar have ever attempted and they are keen to trade
their dililithium for more knowledge, but as their technology is
so new Captain Janeway is cautious. Like the Borg, the Chiar have
extensive nanotechnology and everything is accomplished using these
tiny AI units, which even cover the beings themselves. They seem
such a benign, friendly race - surely nothing can go wrong?
I confess to being impressed with
this novel for several reasons. Firstly, Steven Piziks has managed
to cram an involved story into an admirably concise book without
skimping on anything. Secondly, he has invented a race that would
be nearly impossible to show in an episode of any Star Trek series
unless their budget is increased several fold, and has done so rather
thoroughly. He even finds time for some plot surprises and for Seven
to hunt for more of her missing humanity with Chakotay via the holosuite.
The Doctor's pithy humor is missing, however, even though he appears
on many occasions and this is a shame, but not much of one in such
an enjoyable and packed book. In fact, I think this is probably
the best Voyager noel I have read to date. More from you, Steven
Piziks, please!
