Nemesis
StarTrek
By J
M Dillard (novelization)
If you are a Star Trek
fan, you have probably been wondering when they were going to come
up with another film, and here it is. For those who don’t
want any plot-spoilers, it is best to wait until you are in the
cinema, but if you are bursting to find out the plot, then read
on. This novelization is available for both adult readers and younger
fans which is a great idea, and in the middle of each book are several
stills from the film. There is also an introduction in the adult
book that talks about how the story evolved and at the end, more
about the making of the film and its actors, plus some black and
white behind-the-scenes stills. This is the sort of book that would
make a great gift for the Trekkie in your life!
So, what is it about? Riker and Troi
have at last decided to tie the knot, and the book starts with their
wedding in Alaska and the Captain thinking that nothing will be
the same any more, as the crew is breaking up to pursue other careers
away form the Enterprise. But before the honeymoon can take place
the whole crew is off on a covert diplomatic mission to Romulus
in order to attend negotiations for peace. But there is trouble
brewing from Remus, the sister planet to Romulus, where the inhabitants
live in eternal darkness and labor as slaves for their Romulan masters.
At long last it seems the planet has found a voice in the shape
of Shinzon, a very human-looking being whose appearance bears a
striking resemblance to Picard’s…
It is always fascinating to read about
a new alien species, and I wonder if this will be the only appearance
of the Remans, or even if this is the final film. The story runs
along classic Star Trek lines with the gallant crew risking all
to save the Federation, sneaky Romulans hatching plots and some
noble sacrifices along with the thrilling space battles. Not the
most imaginative of stories and I felt that the whole thing lacked
depth, but on the big screen I imagine it will look wonderful and
most fans will be gripped, at least for the duration of the picture.
Reading about what goes on behind the scenes was particularly interesting,
and the thought that goes into the creation of any new aspect to
the show. Essential for the bookshelf of any true Trekkie, I am
sure.
