Back To The Vortex
The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Doctor Who

by J Shaun Lyon

In May, 2005, TV history was made for millions of Brits when Dr Who burst back onto our small screens, sixteen years after its cancellation in 1989. Many people (including myself) had said that this would never happen. How could such a cult classic that was so much a part of the 1960s and 70s belong in the world of today? If you saw it, or even if you live elsewhere and are still waiting to and want to know what all the fuss is about, then this is the book for you.

Because TV is such a part of our daily lives, TV history is always fascinating. In this tubby book is an exhaustive and entertaining look at every aspect of the new TV series, including all the behind-the-scenes parts that constitute nine tenths of any production. Telos has been closely allied with the series for several years now with several novellas and books about merchandise, so you can be sure that even the most ardent fan is going to find something worthwhile.

There are several chapters dealing with the run-up to the new series (which is a quick way of describing a very in-depth description), notes about the actors and filming and more things than I can express due to space. It isn't until page 209 that we get to the episodes themselves, and here anybody who has previously looked at a Telos guide will know what to expect. Plot, actors, how many people get killed, bits that went awry, the story arc, linking themes and several reviews plus much more get commented on, so it is possible to really find out just about everything you want to know from just this one book.

What impressed me most were the comments and reviews, which all got me thinking about each episode in a whole new way. In the future the social history documented in here and what it tells people about this era will be useful indeed. If you want a glossy coffee table book this probably isn't it (wrong format), but there are some colored pictures; anybody who visits your house and sees it and is even remotely interested in Dr Who will want to look at it, which is enough. As the Doctor would say, fantastic!
