Shadowfall
The First Chronicle of the Godslayer
by James Clemens
James Clemens' highly readable Wit'ch quintet made him a favorite with anybody who likes
a good traditional fantasy with lots of adventure. This first volume in a new set looks
like he is still delivering the goods. Tylar de Noche was a shadowknight before his disgrace,
and now he haunts disreputable places as a mere crippled shadow of his former self. But
when he is accused of killing a deity it looks as though things have taken a turn for even
worse luck, especially as he didn't do it. Escape is the only course, and soon he will
learn that the world is not quite the place he thought it was.
Here is an author who knows his stuff. It's a fat book, but it does contain a fairly
fat story and plenty of people (although not too many) and different venues and plot strands
to keep it all bubbling away merrily. He has created a strange new way of magic involving
the bodily fluids of the deities that seems to work, and has given his characters a
fascinating world to get into trouble in. Action for both male and female characters,
some unguessable twists and turns and plenty of unexplained mysteries make this a good
start to a fine new series. More, please. |
