The White Wolf's Son
The Albino Underground (Elric Saga)
by Michael Moorcock
I am new to Michael Moorcock and his multi-layered fantasy containing Elric, the White Wolf
who has appeared in previous stories. So I was concerned that my lack of familiarity with
the story-line and the characters might be a problem. Luckily, that was not to be, because
The White Wolf's Son stands on its own as a first-rate novel of fantasy, or as
Moorcock has created, the Multiverse.
Oonagh is the heroine here, lives in Yorkshire, England, and is dropped below ground
by a sudden earthquake into unknown caverns. She is befriended by Lord Reynard, an aptly
named talking fox, who takes her to a nearby underground city where alliances are made,
pursuers begin their chase, and Oonagh's real adventures begin.
Of course, the fate of the world, or the Multiverse, is at stake, and Mr. Moorcock
manipulates the reader by toying with shifting realities; one is never sure if events
are real, happening in the past, present or future, or even happening with any reality
at all. Needless to say, the action is relentless, and always interesting. The story is
told from young Oonagh's perspective, and has a fresh, unspoiled feel to it. We care about
her, her friends, and take up her cause with unexpected ease. Naturally, the action leads
to an ultimate fight between the good and evil forces, who struggle over the Cosmic Balance,
and whether or not it will be altered or destroyed.
This is epic fantasy at its finest. The reader is instantly transported into a world
totally different than the real world, yet still with the real world's system of values,
honor, bravery and heroism. The story is likely to please even those unfamiliar with Mr.
Moorcock or Epic Fantasy in general. A wonderful summer read. |
