Dead Man Rising
A Dante Valentine Novel
by Lilith Saintcrow
Necromance Dante Valentine returns in her second adventure, Dead Man Rising. In this novel, Danny, as her
friends call her, is keeping herself busy between Necromance jobs by bounty hunting with her former lover, Jason
Monroe. That keeps her from thinking about the demon lover who was killed in Rio when she’d been working for the
Devil. That job for Lucifer had left her nothing of Tierce Japhrimel but an urn full of ashes, the part of him he’d
given her that had made her part demon, and an empty ache in her heart that Jace Monroe could no longer fill.
Now, Gabriele Spocarelli has called her in to do a Necromance job for the Saint City Police Department, one Gabe
had tried to do herself and failed. Now, Dante tries to raise the ghost of fellow Necromance, Christabel Moorcock.
Christabel has been brutally murdered, the flesh partially flayed from the bones. It had been a horrible death;
there were only parts of her body left, along with a note: "REMEMBER RIGGER HALL."
Rigger Hall was the academy Danny and Christabel had attended to learn to control their psionic gift. It had
bad memories Danny thought she’d buried for good. But they all came screaming back when she made contact with
Christabel’s ghost. All she got from that was an insane spirit screaming, "Remember Rigger Hall! REMEMBER EVERYTHING!"
As in Working for the Devil, Lilith Saintcrow spins a tale that you don’t want to put down. I feel
uncomfortable reading about Dante Valentine’s world, where the Devil is real but God isn’t. I feel that if one of
them is real, the other has to be as well. Other than that, it’s a grand fairy tale for anyone who loves fantasy.
So, pick up Dead Man Rising and go on a wild ride! |
