The Decoy Princess
First book in the Tess series
by Dawn Cook
Princess Contessa has known all her life (all of twenty years) that one day she will rule over the country of Costenopolie.
A prophesy that she might rule over rather more than that has made her the target of assassins, but thanks to wily Chancellor
Kavenlow she has so far avoided death and is a force to be reckoned with. But when Prince Garrett of Misdev asks for her hand
in marriage her parents have to tell her the truth - she is not their daughter! The child of a beggar, she was raised
in the place of the real princess, who is safe in a convent. When everything turns upside down, it is going to be up
to Tess to try and save the day, find out what goes on behind the scenes and why.
Ahh, a fantasy novel that is contained within two covers and has under 400 pages. You couldn’t use this one to prop
open the door, but books are really meant for reading and this one is great fun. Tess tells the story, and we are with
her as she progresses from a sheltered princess to somebody more in charge of her own destiny. On the way she has some
thrilling adventures, meets some interesting people and, ultimately, leaves us wanting more. At the end there are plenty
of loose ends to make us wonder what the next book will contain, and teasers that suggest it will be more than just a
sequel, but rather a separate complete story. My only groans here were during the few battle-of-the-sexes moments when
Tess behaved like the worst sort of romance character (and this is not a romance novel) while her captor behaved like the
counterpart alpha male. If the author has got this out of her system, then we can sit back and enjoy the next novel.
Well paced, well plotted and great entertainment. |
