Knighthood of the Dragon
Dragonmaster, Book Two
by Chris Bunch
It often is difficult to jump into a second book in a series, but Chris Bunch has created a fantasy world that
operates within familiar parameters of most fantasies. Tiny details sometimes are missing, but they don’t impede
the story line. In Knighthood of the Dragon, the second book of the Dragonmaster Trilogy, the main character,
Hal Kalais, is a Dragonmaster of the aerial fleet of dragons used in warfare. There is a known enemy, the Roche, but
it isn’t readily apparent why Kalais’ country is at war with them, except that they have been at war for a number
of years.
Bunch offers adventures aplenty, daring escapes, and political intrigue. He also presents some of the best
characterizations in his renderings of the dragonriders under Kalais’ command. I really wanted to serve with this
bunch of men myself - or at least hear their tales over a drink or two at the close of battle each day.
There is also a heavy dose of romance. I must admit, though, when I read the first opening pages of this book,
I thought I was reading a romance novel (which isn’t my first choice in reading matter) that was set in a fantasy
realm. Soon, however, I found that the courtly amorous pursuits of Kalais were only a small part of the story Bunch
was trying to tell. And that fair Lady Khiri Carstares is more than just a romantic whim.
All in all, Knighthood of the Dragon is a great read. I can’t wait to read the last book in the trilogy. |
