Priestess of the White
Age of the Five Book I
by Trudi Canavan
Trudi Canavan is the award-winning author of the popular Black Magicians trilogy, and
now she turns her attention to another trilogy full of magic and marvels. Auraya is just a
village girl, but her act of bravery brings her talents to the attention of one of the White -a
set of immortals who serve the quintet of deities. Ten years later she is raised to the White
herself, and now the group is complete. Her first missions are to unite the lands of Northern
Ithania, and this takes her to the mountain homes of the winged Siyee. But all is not well,
for there are stories of dark sorcerors menacing the land, and soon a war is being waged. Auraya
has to join in, of course, but she also has her own battle to fight as she decides whether or
not to pursue the forbidden love affair with the Dreamweaver Leiard.
Something keeps the pages turning in this tubby book -a desire to discover more about the magical
realm of Ithania, I think. The pace rumbles along, neither fast nor slow, but taking in plenty
of enjoyable information about the characters and their homes in a way that is both relaxing
and rather addictive. The standout moments in this book are the ones featuring the amiable
Siyee, and perhaps the most interesting character is the resourceful sorceress, Emerahl;
somehow Auraya fails to spring to vibrant life, ditto Leiard. But there is plenty to enjoy
here, and it is easy to see why she is popular, and also why her books were brought out in
another edition for younger readers under the Time Warner "Atom" label. Despite the war,
this is essentially a peaceful, gentle book that is bound to be as popular as her earlier work. |
