The Spear of Lepanto
The Papal Prize, No 1
by Leon Radomile
Leon Radomile’s love of history and genealogy is evident in his first novel, The Spear of Lepanto. In it,
he creates a plausible history surrounding the Battle of Lepanto, which Radomile asserts in this book involved one
of his ancestors and Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. They search for the legendary sword used by Roman
centurion Longinus to pierce Jesus’ side while on the cross.
Radomile’s prose is fluid and descriptive, and his characterizations are crisp. Reading each scene immerses the
reader in 1571 and the diverse cultures of the era: the Italians, the Spanish, and the Ottoman Turks. He makes
history come alive.
I found Radomile’s first installment in this series to be an exciting read. Since the famous Spear of Lepanto
has been reputed to be on display at the Hofsburg Museum in Vienna at the turn of the Twentieth Century, Radomile
will surely bring the spear forward in time to other pivotal struggles for ownership in future books. |
