Working for the Devil

by Lilith Saintcrow

When hell comes knocking at your door, will you answer . . .?

Dante "Danny" Valentine is legendary in her skill as a Necromance-for-hire. Many seek out her services, but few are rewarded with her talents; being a master in her occupation allows her to be selective of the jobs she chooses. One Monday morning, an unexpected intruder knocks on her door. When she answers, an immediate chill runs up her spine. One of Lucifer's henchmen is standing right outside her door. The evil he radiates is a palpable force that fills the air. Through him, she learns that his master has summoned her to his fiery tomb. To refuse the request would put her life in jeopardy.

The journey to hell is one that is unlike any she has ever traveled. Each step takes her to the darkest corner of the world where those who travel that long and isolated road never return. She manages to hide the fear that threatens to consume her, for she knows this meeting is one that will require her full mental alertness.

Upon arriving at the end of her journey, she comes face to face with Lucifer, the Prince of Hades. The evil one is direct in telling her why she has been chosen; he wants her to find and destroy a renegade demon, Vardimal Santino. To refuse his request would be the end of her existence. If she succeeds in the mission, she will be rewarded handsomely, including with the opportunity to go on living. She is familiar with Santino, for he is responsible for the death of one of her closest friends. She accepts the challenge to bring the demon to his knees. Will her strength and determination be enough to win this battle? Failure is not an option.

This is the first Lilith Saintcrow book I have experienced, but it definitely will not be the last! This book intrigued me enough to break out of my normal romance category and explore a genre that I usually don't read. This author has an exceptional voice that gives a gritty, paranormal feel to a highly charged, intense SF novel. Her superb writing will whisk you away to a far and unknown world. You will feel yourself become breathless, as she is able to project each scene with heart-pounding intensity. This book is a definite keeper; I look forward to seeing more from this wonderful author. Very highly recommended.
