Katherine Kurtz continues her series of the Deryni in a new novel, Childe Morgan. The Deryni are a people
on a world in an era of knights, similar to the age of King Arthur. The Deryni possess magic powers, which the
humans do not have. Otherwise, they were indistinguishable from the humans with whom they shared this world.
Yet they were feared and despised because of their powers. Since those powers included mind reading, there had
been good reason for that fear in the past.
Though the Deryni placed limits on themselves, there were always a power-hungry few who were all too eager
to ignore those limits.
Among those are Camille Furstana, a princess of the Festillic line. Zachris Pomeroy, one of her students, is
friends with her nephew, Hogan Furstana, one of the Festillic pretenders to the throne of Gwynedd. That throne is
now held by Donal Haldane, whose son, Brion, will need a Deryni protector to help him gain the use of his Deryni
powers.
Unfortunately, the young Deryni who was to be Brion's protector was murdered. Now, the job fell to Alaric,
son of Kenneth Morgan, a human knight in the service of King Donal. But Alaric is only two years old as the story
begins. Can King Donal stay alive until Brion becomes of age? Even then, will Alaric survive long enough to grow
up? Also, since he is half human, will he have any Deryni powers? And if he does, will they be enough to awaken
Brion's abilities?
Childe Morgan is a fantasy filled with characters who could be a part of our own history. The
situations and the court intrigue, without the magic, could be in any king's court. Life was hazardous in the
middle ages, and children often didn't survive early childhood. Childe Morgan is a story that is
satisfying on its own or within the rest of the series, but it definitely leaves you wanting more. Read the
entire series and enjoy!
