Dennis O’Neil has fashioned an adventure novel reminiscent of the comic book adventures that many of us grew up with.
Vic Sage, a little known comic book superhero, comes to Hub City -the Sodom and Gomorrah of modern times- to
seek information about his biological parents.
Sage has many adventures and meets an incredible number of people who are either super good or super bad, but
none of them have the least thing to do with finding out anything about Sage’s origins.
As could be expected, the comic book characters are bigger than life and provide some exciting (but not very
believable) adventures. These adventures will certainly be welcomed by comic book fans. The inclusion of Batman
and his relationship with Sage does not work very well. Their action toward each other diminishes the image of
both characters.
Even though the action was very episodic, I found myself eagerly reading to see how Sage and his compatriots
would extricate themselves from the next impossible situation.
The ending of the novel is resolved in a comic book fashion. I suppose the reader needs to know he is reading
a novel version of a comic book. The formula works for me. The reader looking for a fast-paced adventure with
lots of action will want to check this book out.
