The High King’s Tomb
Green Rider, Book 3

by Kristen Britain

Following on from Green Rider and First Rider’s Call here is the third (but not final) instalment in the tale of Rider Karigan and her adventures. Following the temporary banishment into the future of Mornhavon the Black, the wall is still standing but for how long? The remnants of the Second Empire are massing under the tough figure of Grandmother, and all that stands between them and victory is one book. Karigan faces a possible arranged marriage, a swashbuckling masked thief and training a raw recruit who sees horses as merely food; and that is just for starters. What about the impending nuptials of King Zachery, the man she has fallen in love with?

These books are entertaining and smoothly flowing reads, if not a fast ones. There is plenty going on so attention needs to be paid constantly so as not to miss anything, repetition notwithstanding. To be fair, there is not too much of this apart from the constant updates on how the wall is faring, and to keep readers on their toes there is even a section that appears to have escaped from another sort of book. Miss Bunch and Miss Bay are back, teacups at the ready, complete with a magic pirate ship. It doesn’t fit the rest of the story, but if Ms Britain ever takes to writing for children it would make an engaging juvenile fantasy. Karigan makes for an engaging heroine, and there is plenty here to entrance most fantasy fans as long as they don’t expect it to be bloodthirsty. This is definitely a series for girls rather than boys, but surely none the worse for that. I’ll keep reading as long as she writes them I am sure; must be that rolling storyteller style that hooks me in.
