Star Trek TOS: Errand of Fury
Demands of Honor Book II

by Kevin Ryan

This is the second part of a trilogy that began back in 2005 with Seeds of Rage, a trilogy that follows on from Errand of Vengeance (also reviewed on this site back in 2002) and the events therein. If you have not read that, do so before reading this series, which follows hot on its heels. These books are set partially on board the Enterprise under Captain Kirk, but mainly focus on the security force instead of the bridge crew, although these feature too. A war with the Klingons looks inevitable, and diplomacy seems the worst method of dealing with a foe who only respects warriors. On the Enterprise, Leslie has to decide whether or not to have her baby, and Michael Fuller has given himself wholly to avenging his son. On the D’k Tahg, Karel finds himself ostensibly led by the honorable Captain Koloth, but the real power is held by the treacherous Councillor Duras. Down on the planet where it all started the primitive Klingon people have been living in peace with each other, but dissent is brewing...

...Now read on! The TV series may be history but the spirit that made it such a legend lives on in print. Here is another exciting and suspenseful trilogy packed with action and character insights. It is interesting to read about some of the other people who make up the crew mainly "before the mast" instead of just their commanding officers (sea story writers take note). This is very much a series concentrating on how war affects ordinary people rather than those who make the decisions, and makes for some thought-provoking (and topical) reading at times. Ryan is skilled at describing action in any form that offsets the more contemplative moments nicely. With books like these, Star Trek seems larger than ever, as everybody has a story to tell, whoever or whatever they are. Good stuff, reminding me why I enjoy Star Trek so much.
