Valentine’s Resolve
A Novel of the Vampire Earth #6
by E. E. Knight
This is the second book I’ve read in The Vampire Earth series, and I find these books surprisingly
enjoyable. Surprising because I’m not usually a fan of books filled with guns and war, but The Vampire Earth
series has enough characterization to keep me glued to the pages even during a shootout. In Valentine’s
Resolve, David Valentine has been asked by his old teacher, Duvalier, to find the Lifeweavers, their alien
allies. They’ve vanished and mankind’s war with the Kurians is doomed without them. The Lifeweavers can change the
DNA of individuals, making them stronger, faster, and better warriors than humanly possible. Humanity needs those
warriors.
Valentine is a soldier and an idealist who’s lost his hope. His search for the Lifeweavers forces him to
question who the good guys really are, and how far can good guys go to reach a justifiable end before they must be
stopped. The depth of characterization makes these novels much more than pure pulpy fun (though they have both
action and humor enough for that, too). I found the world in Valentine’s Resolve totally believable. I found
the last stronghold of government absolutely hysterical. And I found the book enjoyable from beginning to end. It’s
not always a comfortable read (especially if you don’t like violence), but it’s always captivating. Count me a fan. |
