The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld
by Terry Pratchett
Compiled by Stephen Briggs
If somebody asked me what I enjoy most about Terry Pratchett’s books, I would tell them without hesitation
that it is his talent with humor. Not that the stories are funny (they aren’t, all of them) or even the characters,
but his wonderful way with a one-liner, or a pithy reflection on the human condition, or a singularly apt description
that has me nodding in agreement as I laugh out loud. In here you can find Pratchett at his most quotable, beautifully
presented in a manner that even The Patrician would not find displeasing.
This is a handsome volume, the sort of thing to place on your coffee table (it even has a dark brown cover)
to entertain your guests. Inside and out, it looks rather like the sort of book you might buy in Ankh-Morpork, a little
like a grimoire, perhaps, complete with attractive typefaces and curlicues in the right places. Quite simply, it lists
the best quotes from Pratchett’s Discworld books in chronological order, starting with The Color of Magic
and finishing with his latest, Making Money (also
reviewed on this site). You just can’t stop dipping into it to remind yourself how a fantasist made it to
being a midlister, and why you have read all of his books. |
