Zygradon
First in a series
by Michelle L. Levigne
Fantasy writer Michelle L. Levigne has crafted the beginning of a new series set on a world where three groups
struggle in a land marred by starmetal, substances that fall toward the planet in meteor-like showers. One, the
Rey’kil, has great magical and mental powers and the ability to live with the starmetal. The others do not, and
one of them has sworn to destroy the Rey’kil at any cost. All are wary of each other. Upon this landscape young
Mrllis is born, a Rey’kil who soon comes into enormous power, and Ceera, an orphan who develops abilities few
have and most have only dreamed about. These two youngsters grow close and fine tune their abilities until one
day, they forge the Zygradon, a cauldron made of starmetal that has been shown to them through prophetic visions
since they were children. The first book, Zygradon, chronicles the growing-up years of Mrllis and Ceera
and lays the foundation for the changes that will occur in their world as the rest of the series unfolds.
Levigne has created interesting characters in a freshly-envisioned world. I found Mrllis and Ceera and those
close to them to be likeable and unexpected. The villains range from dastardly to merely troubling bullies, but
they provide the necessary tension. And, the new kinds of abilities and magical/psychic technology (such as the
underground tunnels that act as worm holes to other parts of the planet) are fascinating.
Bravo to Levigne for a brand-new fantasy series. I can’t wait for more to come. |
