Skinwalker
Jane Yellowrock is back and this time she's tracking one seriously
scary vampire. He used to hang on a wall in "vamp headquarters,"
but now he's on the streets. He's fast, insane, and protected
by magic. On top of that, he badly injured Jane on their opening
encounter, leaving her more in need of her friends than ever.
As always, I found the character of Jane Yellowrock fascinating.
She has a strong desire to do that right thing, but murky
vampire politics often make it very tough to figure out what
that would be. I don't blame her - I found the vampire politics
confusing as well - but I was still happy to be along for
the ride in Jane's world. She's finding her place in the world,
and we can all relate to that. One thing I especially enjoy
is that Jane is not the only complex character here. They
all have multiple layers and emotions and motivations. It
keeps the plots surprising (if sometimes very complex). Jane
is very introspective in this one, so if you have to have
something blow up or come out fighting in every scene, you
might find this a bit slow - but I certainly did not. Not
a fast read, but a compelling one. |
