This
novel opens with Alex Verus, diviner, on nearly everyone's
villain list. Then Anne Walker, a life mage who cut all ties
with Alex after some truly horrific events in a previous novel,
disappears. No one seems to care terribly much except for
Anne's best friend, Luna -- who also happens to be Alex's
apprentice. Politics and policy keep anyone official from
looking very hard into Anne's disappearance, but Alex refuses
to leave it alone, even when the search for Anne forces Alex
to confront his own greatest fear. Coming into this series
on the second book definitely made it more difficult for me
to connect with these characters, and I would probably have
liked a little more action in the early parts of the plot.
It was hard to parse so many different characters who came
and went in the story almost aimlessly in places. I did enjoy
the world building, especially in the shadow realm, and I
enjoyed how carefully Jacka handled the motivations of the
characters. That went a long way to lending a feeling of reality
to the whole story. Plus, I would like to have a blink fox
of my own. To decide if you'd like one, you'll just have to
check out the book. It's worth a look, but I'd probably recommend
reading the first book in this series before jumping into
the second. I suspect it would save a lot of head scratching.
