Anne McCaffrey gave us telepathic humans riding dragons in a mediaeval world of harpers, healers and holds and Joanne Bertin has gone one further and given us the Dragonlords.  They are humans whose souls are twinned at birth with dragons which gives them the power to change into dragon form at will and also to live for centuries.  They live at Dragonskeep some of the time but venture forth to aid humans.  This time three of them have been sent to settle a Regency dispute and they soon uncover a plot fuelled by black magic.  Two of the Dragonlords are already soultwinned with each other for this is the way they mate but Linden Rathen has nobody and believes that he is doomed to be the last of his kind.  However, as he sorts out the plots and tries to keep alive he is going to have a pleasant surprise.

Joanne Bertin's debut novel is an entertaining fantasy romance with some well-realized and likeable characters.  Sometimes I felt that it was a little repetitive and spun out but on the whole it was enjoyable and I will certainly be reading its sequel Dragon and Phoenix.
