Out of the Darkened Room
When a Parent is Depressed, Protecting the Children and Strengthening the Family
By William R. Beardslee, M. D.

This book presents a smart and healthy approach to helping families deal with depression and contends that the procedure in helping depressed parents needs to be longer than the ten-week session that most insurance companies pay for now. In the world of HMOs and fast-care for mental illnesses, this book looks at families over a period of several years.

It also looks at the procedure of getting help for the parent who is depressed and slowly bringing in the family when the depressed parent is ready. It asks the family members to have open and honest conversations with each other. Also included are several stories about real families who have experienced this approach for a number of years and have succeeded in getting the depressed parent help with their mental illness.

This is probably one of the best approaches with providing the person who is depressed with ongoing family support.
