If
There's One Thing I've Learned...
How to Seize Your Once-in-a-lifetime Chance to Get It Right
By James Green
I'm
at an age where it seems as if when I'm with my friends we spend
a lot of time discussing the "what ifs" of life. For that
reason, right from the beginning, the book was personal to me. There
wasn't a story that I couldn't relate to on one level or another.
James
Green takes the stories of various people who have experienced the
regrets of the paths not taken, the moments seized when presented
to them, the loves lost because of action or inaction, and the hand
of fate reaching into their lives. If There's One Thing I've
Learned… is his collection of stories.
I
found it a compelling read and actually read through it twice. I
don't think anyone could pick up this book and not have it touch
them in one way or another. The stories are all inspirational in
one way or another, and each one made me think in a different way
about my life and the events which I wish I could change or do differently.
Green
has organized the stories into sections, each with a small introduction
by him, and some of the stories contain notes and observations he's
made. This is all laid out nicely at the beginning, making the book
an easy read. At the back of the book he lists the questions he
asked of them, and I found myself thinking of how I would answer
them.
With
a fourteen-year-old daughter, I wish she'd read the book and take
to heart the regrets of others, some of which are my own and which
I've tried to share with her. There are a lot of good messages here
for younger people on seizing the moment and running with it. At
that age would I have listened to anyone? I don't know, but the
book will be here for her, should she seek its inspiration.
