Lean Mom, Fit Family

by Michael Sena, C.F.S., Kirsten Straughan, R.D., L.D., and Tom Sattler, Ed.D.

Calling all moms! Do you want your family to get off the couch and get moving? Do you struggle at mealtimes: preparing one "diet" meal for yourself and a separate meal for the rest of the family? In Lean Mom, Fit Family, authors Michael Sena, Kirsten Straughan, and Tom Sattler outline a health and fitness plan for the whole family. The book addresses moms, who can be the driving force behind their family's health.

Lean Mom, Fit Family creates a comprehensive, six-week health plan. The book includes a health quiz, healthy food choices, recipes, exercise goals, food diaries, family meeting ideas, and health and fitness tips. Each step gently guides the family to improved health and fitness. Mr. Sena reminds the reader that success is not in perfection but rather in progress.

Meal planning becomes a breeze with a variety of dishes to please even the pickiest eater. Sample dinner dishes include Asian steak and brown rice, soft tacos, pork tenderloin with wheat pasta and vegetables, homemade pita pizzas with salad, Sloppy Joes, and Cajun-spiced chicken. The book also includes healthy choices for a variety of popular restaurants. Each family member chooses a portion size based on three groups: a goal weight of 160 pounds or lower, a goal weight of over 160 pounds, and for kids 12 and under. Exercises combine written instructions with pictures of adults, teenagers, and children performing the exercises.

The authors Mr. Sena, famed personal trainer, Ms. Straughan, a registered dietician, and Mr. Sattler, a physiologist and sports medicine specialist, provide sensible advice in this book. Lean Mom, Fit Family proves that a health and fitness plan can be easy to follow and fun to do. In week two, my family already noticed some changes: increased energy and minus a few pounds. The meals taste great. Some dishes list new recipes, but many are favorites with a healthier twist. The weekly family activity provides some quality time amidst our hectic life.

If your family wants help on the road to fitness, I highly recommend you jog to the store to buy Lean Mom, Fit Family!
