Bipolar II
Enhance Your Highs, Boost Your Creativity, and Escape the Cycles of Recurrent Depression - The Essential
Guide to Recognize and Treat the Mood Swings of This Increasingly Common Disorder
by Ronald R. Fieve, M.D.
In Bipolar II, psychopharmacologist and bipolar researcher Fieve presents the softer side of bipolar
disorder, a less understood and less diagnosed subtype of the bipolar spectrum. People with bipolar II may
experience extended periods of euphoria, energy, productivity, and confidence... until the inevitable crash with
symptoms of gloom, hopelessness, poor concentration, and a feeling of emptiness. Fieve, also the author of
Moodswing says that sufferers of bipolar II often overlook the downside because the upside is so pleasant.
He cautions readers, however, that the devastating depression which follows the euphoria sometimes results in suicide.
On the bright side, he recommends the right blend of medicine and counseling to keep bipolar II patients performing
at the top of their game. He cites many creative and industrious people (e.g., Carrie Fisher, Patty Duke, Linda
Hamilton, Jim Carrey) working in the creative arts who openly profess to having bipolar disorder. Once diagnosed
and treated, the condition can actually enhance creative output.
The point of Bipolar II is to help people differentiate between bipolar I and II, and to outline how
you can recognize and treat the latter through the help of a mental health professional. For instance, he describes
sleep disorders that can be the first clue that something is wrong. Fieve includes sidebars, lists, self-tests,
charts, and other resources to aid readers. Those suffering from bipolar II and their families may benefit from
reading this book. |
