On Becoming Fearless
...in Love, Work, and Life

by Arianna Huffington
Read by the author

Author and nationally syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington compiles some of the latest medical, psychological, and philosophical research in her new self-help book for women, On Becoming Fearless. Contained on three CDs for a total of three hours, the book provides an overview of conquering small everyday fears (Is that a new wrinkle? Am I coming on too strong at work?) and the big fears in life (Should I leave my husband? What happens when I die?).

To support her suggestions, Huffington quotes from a variety of sources including books, magazines, case studies, doctors, experts, friends, and the classic literary works of William Shakespeare. She offers personal stories about her mother, herself, and her two daughters as examples of overcoming fears. She frequently references her other books, an earlier love affair, and her unsuccessful campaign as governor of the state of California.

The ideas set forth are basic instructions that, while easy to understand, may not be so simple to implement in our daily lives. For instance, Huffington says to stop worrying because it wastes energy, stop focusing on the cultural myth of physical perfection, and stop working so hard that we ignore the most important things (and people) in our lives. She also offers suggestions about what we should do: look for people who bring out the best in us; base decisions on fearlessness rather than fear; and model fearlessness for our children.

Huffington offers an inspiring collection of ideas for overcoming fears of failure and fears of success. This book should be especially valuable for infrequent readers of self-help guides. Other more frequent readers of psychology, relationship, and self-help publications will find little here that’s new.
