In THE ALIENS OF TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, Patrick Bone introduces us again to some of the eccentric characters we first met in his previous novel, A MELUNGEON WINTER. Set in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, in the year 1956, the story centers around seventeen-year-old Chester "Chess" Cumberland.

Chess knew better than to go up on Devil's Mountain at night, especially with a full moon shining. Over the last century, many children of Transylvania County had vanished on that mountain.

But the girl Chess had loved since kindergarten, Hannah Jane Goins, had agreed to accompany John Croshaw on a visit to Devil's Mountain, and Chess was not about to let her go alone. John Croshaw was the new kid at school, and he was more than just handsome. To Hannah Jane, he was irresistible. So Chess put aside what Momma Opalona had told them about vampire aliens and set out on the adventure of his life.

THE ALIENS OF TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY is the story of a young man who is punished for telling the truth, just because the truth is hard to believe. It is also the story of growing up and accepting responsibilities, of doing what is right regardless of the danger one must face. The characters are flawed and imperfect, and totally believable. Laced with humor and trials, the story keeps the reader absorbed and leaves him wanting more. I will read this book, and any others Mr. Bone writes, again and again.
