Sharon has written a heart-warming and inspiring book telling us how she found a way to make Christmas more meaningful, and a pattern that each of us can follow.

She recalls her childhood Christmases in an "ethnic Jewish family that was pop culturally pro-Noel." Was that confusing? It seems that her parents picked parts of the Christian Christmas tradition to integrate with their own Jewish traditions. She spend years envying the other kids and the Christmas traditions that she wasn't allowed to share; the carols, the feasts and the glitter.

She tried to make each Christmas perfect to make up for what she perceived as her family's failings. She never could quite pull it off, and then she discovered "Operation Santa Claus" at her local post office. It gave people a chance to answer letters to Santa that were destined for the dead letter office. In her work to see that needy children got their Christmas wishes answered, Glassman discovered a whole new joyful meaning for Christmas. She braves shopping crowds, and long lines at the post office to make destitute children's dreams come true.

Her comic wit and New Yorker mental attitude make the book fun to read. Her commitment to Operation Santa Claus is commendable, and the real letters from to Santa, written by children you just want to hug, make the concept one we all want to share in.

Operation Santa Claus is a real charity, and one that would be a great source of pleasure to participate in for the joy it brings to impoverished kids...a boost to everyone's holiday spirit. If your post office doesn't have an Operation Santa Claus, you can call 212-967-8585 to have questions answered, or to request a letter by mail.
