Geography Club
By Brent Hartinger

Not everybody’s keen on “Will & Grace” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” as Carson and company would find if they invaded Robert L. Goodkind High School.

Carson: “Oh look, so quaint, they’re slapping each other in the locker room as if high school athletics really matter. Like most of these guys will ever get a scholarship…and what’s up with those shorts?”

Carson spots Russel Middlebrook, hero of Geography Club.

Carson: “Hey, girlfriend!”

Russel: “Keep it down!”

Carson: “By the way, the hunk over there is checking out your abs.”

Russel: “What? No way. Kevin Land is not gay. I have to keep up my disguise.”

Carson: “Mmm-hmm. You do know Halloween’s not for a few months, don’t you? Good God, don’t you watch our show?”

Russel: “I am not gay. Neither is my best friend Min.”

Carson: “Mmm-hmm. Well, she does wear makeup, but she’s definitely gay.”

Russel: “No way.”

Carson: “And what’s up with meeting the guy in a playground?”

Russel: “What?”

Carson: “And this Geography Club to disguise all of you being gay…poor high school students, like anyone really cares if you sit with the outcast Brian Bund one day at lunch…”

Russel: “What?”

Carson: “It’s your book. I’m skipping ahead…my oh my. Well, the author seems to have nailed what most of us felt in high school. All the worry about fitting in…the going out on dates with girls that like us even though their girl friend is torturing our best friend Gunnar…I think he suspects you’re gay.”

Russel: “No way.”

Carson: “Yes. Read on.”

Russel: “You mean my life is a book? I’ll die.”

Carson: “No, you’ll help people just like you, as well as everyone else, understand that it’s not nice to hate someone because of sexual orientation. Especially when you are gay…whoops, I’m skipping ahead again. I’ve caused enough trouble. Plus, this is high school and it feels creepy. Hang in there, Russel. Bye!”

Russel: “I’ve got to read that book.”

As Carson skedaddles, the rest of us reach for Geography Club too. It’s an excellent read for teens and their parents.
