Letting go of Bobby James, or How I found My Self of Steam
By Valerie Hobbs
Sixteen
years old, recently married and in a restroom far from home, Sally
Jo (Jody) Walker has to make a major decision. Should she spend
her life with the boy she loves dearly but who would strike his
wife over coleslaw? Should she go back home to Purley, Texas and
the father that abuses her mother? Or should she hide until her
impatient groom drives off and leaves her to start a new life?
Armed
with determination and a strong belief in the kindness of strangers,
Jody decides upon the last option. Her choice leads to many more
questions. Where will she sleep? How will she buy food? Can she
make it on her own?
Letting
Go of Bobby James, or How I found My Self of Steam is an entertaining
fantasy. Ms. Hobbs takes the unique approach of telling the story
through Jody's letters to the owner of the convenience store where
she purchased the fateful coleslaw. The protagonist is likeable
and resourceful. Diverse characters add depth to the story. The
plot contains enough obstacles to keep a steady pace. Perhaps in
an effort to downplay the violence of spousal abuse, Jody's final
showdown with her husband is too easily resolved, and the fairy
tale ending is idealistic. If you're looking for an uplifting story
about a teen who beats seemingly insurmountable odds, this is the
novel for you!
