Playing In Traffic
By Gail Giles

Matt is a kid who keeps a low profile. He thinks of himself as a ghost. He doesn’t want to be seen. Doesn’t want to be memorable. Then Skye chooses him. There is nothing ghostlike about Skye. Everyone notices her. No one forgets her. She threatens Matt’s self-image and his ghost life – everything about her is dangerous. Does he love her? Does she love him? Is anything real? This book is about questions and Matt is constantly questioning. So are we, as readers. Just as Matt rocks back and forth in his feelings and decisions – so does the reader. We want to yell at Matt, then we want to hug him for being who he is.

This book is anything but bland. The writing is fast-paced and interesting. It’s the kind of book that will keep a reader up, turning pages to find out what happens. Just when you think you know what to expect, Giles delivers something totally different. Just when you think you have Skye pegged, you find yourself joining Matt in total confusion. And yet, it works. Both Skye and Matt are believable characters in a struggle – but for what? Love? Power? Acceptance? The book leaves you guessing until the very end – then leaves you with a new question. One only you can answer.
