The Raven's Ring Pin
By
John Anacker
Norse
Mythology makes an interesting setting for this young adult fantasy
novel about two ravens, Thokk and Rag, who find an ancient ornamental
stickpin with special powers and the adventures that ensue when
15-year-old Samuel discovers the pin in the attic where Rag has
hidden it. When Samuel holds the pin, he can understand the raven's
speech. Moreover, when Thokk mocks the inscription on the pin --
the group finds themselves transported to the frozen wastes of the
Norse gods. Things rapidly deteriorate to very adventurous. This
book isn't a classic "page-turner" but Samuel's journey
will lure readers through to the end. I found the Norse gods, magical
beings, and ravens interesting and well handled. The humans seemed
to give the author a bit more trouble and sometimes the characterization
seemed inconsistent or a little shallow. A few aspects of the happy
conclusion are also too pat. Still, overall, the book captured my
attention, renewed my interest in Norse mythology, and made me glad
I stuck with it for the whole ride. I wouldn't recommend it for
the reluctant reader but for the book loving teen -- it's a good
read.
