Bob the Dragon Slayer

by Harry E. Gilleland, Jr.

What do you get when you cross a normal peasant boy, an unknown wizard, and a town plagued by a foul tempered dragon? Bob the Dragon Slayer!

This novella, sparse on description but big on action, will appeal to teenage boys and reluctant readers. While teenage girls who enjoy fantasy may also like the story line, they may tire of the sexual innuendo and lustiness of some of the characters.

Overall, this is an amusing spin on the fantasy novel, for the common man. When a wizard reveals himself to Bob and gives him a sword, Bob names it 'Bruce'. The fact that 'Bruce' is "forged by the same hands that created Excalibur" is lost on Bob, for he has no idea who King Arthur is.

Bob courageously blunders along seeking fame and fortune and the title of knight. By the end, Bob has found true love and this little satire is complete. It's a fast and easy read. Predictable at times, the overall story is silly enough to keep you turning the pages until the end. If you're interested in fantasy that doesn't take itself seriously, Bob the Dragon Slayer, is worth taking a look at.
