The
Hero Perseus
A
Mad Myth Mystery
By
Robyn DiTocco, Tony DiTocco
I
have always loved Greek mythology and was pleasantly surprised at
the way the DiToccos wove mythology into the everyday life of a
modern teenager. By day, seventeen-year-old PJ Allen goes to school,
falls in love, plays football, and battles his enemies. By night
he is the mythological hero, Perseus. Hermes appears to him and
persuades PJ to accompany him back in time to set things right with
Zeus, and to dispatch the Gordon, Medusa, in order to return Pegasus
to Zeus. It seems that there was a lost moment in time way back
then that now threatens to wipe out humanity with a worldwide drought
that is plaguing the modern world. Perseus, or PJ, now has the opportunity
to correct the lost-time problem and save humankind.
The multilevel plot is
a bit complicated, but fast moving, with wonderful, likable characters
that are entirely believable-even the gods and goddesses. I thought
that the kids seemed younger than seventeen; nevertheless, it is
a great story with a surprise ending.
The DiToccos have
pioneered a painless way to teach kids classic mythology, with sound
research and enough excitement and humor to keep kids glued to the
page.
