Nothing Can Keep Us Together
A Gossip Girl Novel
by Cecily von Ziegesar
Nothing Can Keep Us Together is another invitation to curl up with the rich teens
who behave so very badly. If you’ve missed Gossip Girls 1-7, you might want to play a
little catch-up before diving into this one; otherwise, you won’t quite get enough of
a scorecard for all the players. The private school teens are getting ready to graduate.
The girls are sorting out what white dress to wear and whether in their futures they really
need boyfriends. The boys are mostly confused -and mooning over the girls they have or the
ones they’ve lost. I liked seeing girls who are a bit more confident about boys; you won’t
find any clinging vines amongst these fashion divas. The motivation of just about everyone
is startlingly shallow and self-absorbed, something the radical Vanessa comments on throughout
the novel, even recognizing her own dips into the shallow end of the motivation pool.
The author spends time inside the head of virtually every young character so there’s not
really any time to build a connection with any of the characters; this book is basically a
parade. You watch it. You marvel. And you can’t look away. But when you’re done, it’s hard
to pick out anything meaningful. It’s total escapist fluff and totally yummy. |
