Pretty, Pretty
by K. C. Oliver
For those of us who love an old-fashioned mystery, K. C. Oliver's Pretty, Pretty is
a great read. Best friends Quinn Hunter and Holly Gates are thoroughly modern young women
who seek employment an ocean away from home at an old hotel in Hawaii. What they stumble
into is as goose-bumpy as any classic thriller of the 1940s, complete with an exotic isolated
location, mystery figures stalking the hotel corridors at night, objects-and people-going
missing, and secrets and secret passageways. Toss in a little romance from Jaxon Caine,
who is both handsome and rich, and the story has everything you could ever want.
Oliver's dialogue is believable for two 21st century 18-year-olds striking out on their
own before college, but it doesn't dip into sarcastic teeneeze that marks many a sitcom or
teen book. Quinn and Holly are the girls next door you can find in any town. Independent,
yes, but not uppity. They are genuine and hard-working, and they are just as susceptible
to a good scare as any of us.
But it is Quinn and Holly's curiosity and courage that solve the mystery and nearly get
them killed!
Pretty, Pretty is a great, fast read. I keep wondering if K.C. Oliver will write
more about Quinn and Holly and other eerie situations they get into. All I can say is:
