The Troll Treasure

by John Vornholt

In this last part of the Troll trilogy (The Troll King and The Troll Queen are also reviewed on this site) Rollo and his friends have to find the missing treasure. To do this they have to brave fierce monsters in the Great Chasm, sort out Clipper now she has gone to the bad, and overcome Stygius Rex once more. Back with a vengeance, he is all set to take over the land of Bonespittle and enslave the trolls again, unless our hero has a cunning plan.

It seems that no fantasy worth its salt can exist without being a trilogy, although the story could have easily fit into two books. I enjoyed seeing the tangled tale being sorted out, particularly the wizard's surprising fate - not something I guessed would happen, which is always pleasant. Some new elements are introduced in this final book, and the underground scenes reminded me of a role-playing game, something that is sure to appeal to computer buffs. Once again though this is very much a book for younger readers as the humor that had me laughing in the first book is still absent, and the elements here are very much out of fairy tales albeit ones for more modern tastes. Younger teens and even "tweens" who want an introduction to fantasy novels would enjoy this trilogy I am sure - it bridges the gap between fairy stories and adult fantasy reasonably well.
