Haters

by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez

Since I am not a fan of books about how all popular girls are evil, I was prepared to dislike Haters, but this book packs a lot of surprises. It’s the story of Pasquala Rumalda Quintana de Archuleta (Paski, please,) a quietly happy girl whose life in Taos, New Mexico, is uprooted by her artist father when he hits the big time - and the big time means Southern California. The interaction between Paski and her father is insightful and moving. The romantic elements are fresh and feel honest. My favorite part is Paski’s psychic gifts and how a girl who wants to stay firmly out of the limelight deals with visions which must be acted upon. Toss in a charmingly eccentric grandmother, paper-thin apartment walls plus mountain biking and you have a plot which moves at a brisk pace with plenty of twists. This is Alisa Valdez-Rodriquez’ first book for teens - I hope it’s not her last.
