Dennis L. McKiernan is a prolific fantasy writer with many books under his pen. Once upon an Autumn Eve is the
third in a four-part series using the seasons as a starting place. The two previous books are Once Upon a Winter's
Night and Once Upon a Summer Day. The books also loosely retell old fairy tales.
In Once upon an Autumn Eve, the writer chooses to retell the story or plot of the fairy tale, Glass Mountain.
A beautiful faerie princess comes upon the body of a handsome mortal knight who has stumbled into the enchanted forest
of Autumnwood. He is wounded and pursued by Goblins.
The young princess, Liaze, fights off the nearest Goblins, gets the knight Sieur Luc on his horse and takes him to
her home to doctor him back to health. Luc heals, and in the process he and the princess Liaze fall madly in love.
All cannot be so simple, though, and Luc is kidnapped by the evil Wizard Orbane and his three witches. He is taken
to a mountain where he is held captive. The princess has only two moons to save him or he will perish and break her heart
forever.
This book was well written, with a wonderful change of pace. The handsome knight in shining armor did not save the day
this time, but needed the help of a beautiful young woman to save him. Hooray for strong women characters!
