The Rock of Realm

by Lea Schizas

The Rock of Realm is the story of two girls, Alex and Sarah, and their dog and a pet squirrel. By means of a rock, some glitter, and what they think is a silly little rhyme, they find themselves transported into another land, where dogs, squirrels, and even a hamster can speak. Here, they find that Alex is not a normal human, but was born in this land and was whisked away many years before for her own safety. Yet, her fate is here and she finds herself in the middle of intrigue between the Council and the evil person known as Dread. Alex and her friends have to use all of their wits and courage to journey to the place where they can make it back home.

There are icky monsters called the Braks and passages that keep changing. When the friends become separated and they are reunited, another friend goes missing. This keeps happening throughout their journey, complicating an already difficult quest. Heroes are found in the most unexpected places.

Author Lea Schizas has created likeable characters and enough plot twists and deception to keep readers guessing. Hats off to Schizas for a fine first novel for young readers.
