Souls of the North Wind

by Chrissy K. McVay

Iksik is a member of the Ihalmiut tribe that lives on the Canadian tundra. Life is hard and the landscape and weather do little to make it any easier. As a young teenager Iksik's responsibilities are many. After a journey into town by dogsled he accidentally incurs the wrath of an old witch woman who places a curse on him. The story that follows is a tale of both family and tribal traditions and a fight for survival.

After a near death on the tundra Iksik suffers a slow recovery and is looked on by the other tribal members as a possible cause for their recent bad luck. His cousin, Kiviok, feels that they must make a journey and try to remove the curse in order to win back the tribe's trust.

The story that follows is a true adventure with both boys fighting now not only the elements but the superstitions and fears that are part of the Ihalmiut beliefs, They learn to depend on each other, themselves and the dogs that make up the team that carries them.

Chrissy McVay is a multitalented writer whose works have appeared in Aim Magazine Fiction Primer and many other publications. Her book, Souls of the North Wind, is a very well researched story with a wonderful moral working along in the background. More please Ms. McVay.
