And Then There Was Light
by Ann Dennis
And Then There Was Light, a 23 page e-byte story aimed at young adults, begins like a typical tale of
teenage angst with the romantic breakup of high school sweethearts, Seth and Candy, plus the added weight of
academic troubles, disloyal friends, and parental discontent. It soon morphs into a tale of suicide prevention
via ghostly angel intervention on the good ol’ "Truth or Dare" bridge. Although generally well-written, this
short piece by Ann Dennis would be a fairly mediocre offering without the surprising twist near the end. The
post-script future-forward finale showing Seth 12 years later, having become a father himself, seems gratuitous
and overdone. The language includes a few normal high school obscenities and slang, but is generally
inoffensive. This short book is a swift, easy read and could be whole-heartedly recommended to any depressed,
or even un-depressed, teen who needs his/her perspective broadened. Although some more cynical young adults
might find the whole piece a bit sappy, And Then There Was Light could start a decent classroom discussion
on teen problems in general and would be especially appropriate for suicide prevention week. |
