Stuck in the 70’s
by D.L. Garfinkle
Time travel can be tough to explain.
Do you use magic? Do you use physics? Do you use a really fast DeLorean?
In Stuck in the 70’s, D.L. Garfinkle doesn’t bother explaining
it at all. It happened; the characters just have to deal with it.
The novel opens in 1978 when hopelessly nerdy Tyler Gray finds a beautiful
naked girl in his bathtub. In 2006, Shay Saunders falls asleep after
too much sex and champagne, only to wake up and discover she's no
longer rich, pampered, or home. Both characters have a lot of adjusting
to do. Ultimately Stuck in the 70’s is about change -can a
person truly change? Everyone changes and must sort out whether it’s
for the good or the bad. I found the book funny, fast-paced light
reading. After having been Tyler’s age in the 70’s, I’m a bit disappointed
I didn’t get the Betty Crocker mom that he had, but the mom’s transformation
does make for great comedy. Ultimately, it’s not a deep novel but
it does give a revealing look at the reality that though times, fashion,
and cool language have changed, people are really much the same. I
enjoyed the novel and I suspect Garfinkle fans everywhere will giggle
with glee over it. |
