Stefan Koski's Miscellaneous Philosophy: the Underclassman Years begins with his
philosophy: my entire philosophy is that at some point I missed something, and it was
important. This tour through the day-to day school day is written by a sixteen year old
with an attitude. In his opening notes he asks his reader not to be offended. I took
him at his word, but much of the writing was for shock value rather than the literal truth.
Koski wants us to believe that everything is school was a waste, yet he learned to write
and write well. He did grudgingly pay homage to his English teacher. Read his "journal"
with the idea that he aims for shock value, and you will find his entries about his teachers
and classes witty and amusing.
His description of Terryville High School and its teachers and classes are entertaining
if the reader keeps the source of this information in mind. The reader suspects (almost
to a certainty) that the descriptions are exaggerated in a negative vein.
Having said all of this, I enjoyed the tour greatly, and I thought, "I wish I could have
written that well as a high school sophomore."
I believe Mr. Koski's attitude toward school and his teachers will change as he matures.
In the meantime he has the talent to be a successful writer.
