One Step Over The Border
by Stephen Bly
Hap
Bowman and Laramie Majors, a couple of rodeo cowboys, are going
to make one trip across the American Southwest in search of Hap's
Juanita, then call it quits and find real jobs. Hap fell in love
with a girl named Juanita when he was twelve years old and has dreamed
of her ever since. She is Hispanic, has a birthmark that is in the
shape of a tiny horse's head under her right ear, and probably lives
within sight of the Rio Grande.
Hap and Laramie’s hilarious misadventures kept me laughing
all the way through this entertaining quest for true love. They
experience one disappointment after another as they meet a series
of potential Juanitas. These two wonderfully exciting characters
are in trouble of one kind or another all the way through this zany
adventure. They cause a border incident in Mexico and inadvertently
become heroes in other adventures, where they round up wild mustangs
on a military testing ground, fend off an irate husband, and ride
bucking bulls in rodeos, all in search of the elusive Juanita.
I love the way award-winning author Stephen Bly writes. He gives
us humorous entertainment at it's best with these two modern-day
cowpokes expecting to find true love in the next town, reminding
us that life isn't so much about the destination as it is the journey.
The banter between two good friends is witty and engaging; reminiscent
of old western movies when the language and plots were still clean,
and the boys do believe in God. If you are looking for a Brokeback
Mountain theme or an explicit sex and violence western, you won't
find it here.
And if this takes your fancy, you can even help Hap search for his
Juanita. He will send you a "Have You Seen My Juanita Search
Kit." www.onestepovertheborder.com/
