This how-to starts off in a rousing way, making the reader believe that he or she can write a mystery. The author then moves onto the basics describing the different types of mysteries and sleuths, how to decide what point of view or views to use, how to get and develop ideas, how to conduct research, and many other necessary elements.
The book is packed full of powerful examples that illustrate the most effective way of structuring a mystery. There are also examples of less effective ways to write in the mystery genre. The author delivers insightful instruction in a witty and challenging way that sustains the reader's interest from the first to the last page of the book.
Ms. Roberts has done a superb job. This is a useful and comprehensive reference book for writers aspiring to write in the mystery genre. After reading this book, I feel much better prepared to tackle the writing of a mystery than I've ever felt before.
