Written exclusively for
the Book of the Month Club, Stephen King's "Secret Windows" is a companion
book to his latest release "On Writing". Both are non-fictional works
that discuss the books he has written and offer tips on writing itself.
"Secret Windows" contains
essays and some fictional shorts that show his early attempts at writing
and his writing through the years. While On Writing seems as if it were
written for a group, "Secret Windows" gives you the feeling that Mr. King
is speaking only to you. It did not strike me as being as warm and inviting
as "On Writing" felt. While some of the essays deserve some kudos, there
is a bit of repetition between the books.
Highlights in this book
are the stories written for Dave's Rag (his brother' s attempt at a town
newspaper). The two stories- Jumper and Rush Call- were written when Stephen
King was still in Middle School. Very well written stories considering
his young age that demonstrate the promise for a grand future. "Great
Hookers I Have Known" was my favorite of the essays and not what you are
thinking, either.
This book will still have
appeal to his biggest fans because it does offer more insight into the
author whose books scare us time and again. But if I had to choose between
the two books, I have to go with "On Writing" as being the better book
to own.
