Murder and Salutations
A Card Making Mystery, No. 3
by Elizabeth Bright
If you thought that making cards for
a living would be safe and harmless then think again! Jennifer Shane
runs Custom Card Creations in the small Virginia town of Rebel Forge
and already has two successful murder investigations under her belt
(Invitation
For Murder and Deadly
Greetings are also reviewed on this site). This time, Jennifer
gets invited to the Chamber of Commerce annual awards evening, and
is amazed to be nominated Businessperson of the Year. Her triumph
is short lived because as soon as the announcement is made there is
a scream from the kitchen - the Chamber's president, Eliza Glade,
has been murdered! Prime suspect is Jennifer's own sister whose husband
had been having an affair with Eliza, and it is up to Jennifer to
try and clear her name.
Nobody can truly protest that the hobbyhorse gets ridden hard in this story, as the card tips are minimal and
not a lot of crafting goes on at all. Not that I am complaining about this, as I like my murder mysteries with
the crime in the forefront and this is exactly how this book is constructed. If this makes it sound linear, it's
not, as Jennifer has other adventures, such as problems with her apartment, meeting her best friend's new boyfriend
and more, all of which are germane to the case. Rebel Forge is just the kind of small town that people have in
mind when they say they would like to live in one, and when Jennifer has various problems to deal with, her family
and friends are right behind her. This is a cozy after all! As with the other books in this series, I like the
way there are always some loose ends left hanging at the end, and I can see how this will segue into the next book;
always a nice touch and guaranteed to keep readers wanting more. A good series that keeps getting better. |
